Design Intent

The Mills encompasses a pair of rectilinear volumes stacked atop one another, giving the home the identity of contemporary design. Clean lines and symmetry were key within the cube-like structure, allowing spaces to be cleverly divided without compromising the flow between living areas. Glass fenestration from both the upstairs and downstairs spaces offer views to the pool and garden areas, while flooding the north facing rear of the home with natural light.

The distinct layering of concrete, zinc and cedar add warmth and texture to the project and an inviting street presence. Internally, a timber staircase anchored by an off-form concrete wall is shadowed by double height windows, allowing natural light to flood into the main passageway. Features such as a teal velvet breakfast seat and patterned tiling in the children’s bathrooms add another dimension to the design of the project and a juxtaposition to the neutral palette chosen by the clients.

The Mills residence offers a functionally designed home, focusing on open spaces that allow fluidity within zones. Indoor/outdoor flow through the use of large glass sliding panels allows for receptivity to cool and warm temperatures and create a space that is consistently adaptable to family needs. Contemporary styling gives character to the home and offers a comfortable living environment for the family to enjoy for years to come.
